Either you have a CAST IRON sump pump or you are getting IRON OXIDE coming in with the ground water. It is normal for cast iron pumps to rust. This doesn't cause any problems. If there is abundant orange coating on the pump and the container it is in, you likely have a lot of iron in your ground water. You can do anything for iron coming in with ground water. You can clean your sump pit and pump occassionally with IRON OUT. You can buy this at any local plumbing store and at a lot of grocery stores in the laundy detergent section. You can find some other helpful info on basement water problems at http://www.b-dry.com/wet-basement-analyzer.html
References :
http://www.b-dry.com/wet-basement-analyzer.html
